Best Time To Visit Kanha National Park

The Park is open to visitors from October 15 to June 30th each year.

Kanha Tiger Reserve is managed by the Government of India. Thus, the Park timings, access and facilities are dependent on rules set by the Park management and are subject to change without prior notice.

Kanha Tiger Reserve is only open to visitors between October and June each year inclusive.Summer temperature ranges from 11° C to 43° C while in winter it is from -2° C to 29° C.

In October and November, the Park is at its greenest with thick vegetation and verdant trees and grass. Temperatures range from between 28C to 12C with warm days and cool mornings and evenings.

In December and January, the temperatures can drop to sub zero, ranging from a warm 24C in the days to -1C early mornings. The grasses begin to turn colour and seasonal water ways slow down to a trickle. Migratory birds and the Gaur come into the meadows and waterbodies.

February and March, temperatures rise rapidly to the mid 30s but mornings and evenings can still be cool with temperatures as low as 10C in the mornings. The Park changes colour as trees drop their leaves, preparing for spring. The rutting season of the deer coincides with the flowering of Mahua (Madhua indica) trees and the subtle scent of sal blossoms (Shorea robusta) fragrances the air.

April and May are the Peak Summer months with temperatures hitting higs of upto 46C. Late night and mornings are cool (18C). The grasslands and shrubs turn golden, vegetation dies down and visibility is at its maximum.

For visits to the reserve, clothing in subdued colors especially greens and browns help you to blend with the forest causing minimum disturbance to wildlife.

Winter mornings can be very cold as all trips into the Tiger Reserve are made in open 4x4 vehicles. We recommend that you carry plenty of warm clothing including gloves, scarves and thermals if you are planning to visit Bagh Villas between December and February. In the summers as the sun is strong, we recommend that you carry a hat or head covering of some sort.

While we recommend that you bring a pair of binoculars with you especially if you are interested in Bird Watching as the region boasts of several hundred bird species, we do keep a few pairs that we would b e happy to share with you.

While we do have certain essentials at Bagh Villas, we recommend that you carry enough medication, sun creams, clothing and other necessities with you. We recommend taking precautions against insects the year round and provide insect repellent creams and vaporisers in the cottages.
